About

PCL Edmonton Buildings and Civil are available to support your building retrofit needs. Please contact us to get started.

As regulations for sustainable buildings become increasingly stringent, the construction industry is evolving to meet higher standards. Across North America, building codes are advancing to promote sustainable design and enhance energy efficiency, and PCL is leading the way, reaching for continuous improvement in sustainability.

While building codes establish baseline requirements for elements such as insulation, windows, and mechanical systems, many clients are setting their sights higher, pursuing certifications like Passive House and LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Achieving these ambitious standards requires a high-performance, energy-efficient building envelope that minimizes environmental impact and maximizes long-term performance.

Best outcomes are rooted in the early engagement of PCL’s in-house experts through the preconstruction process. Integrated collaboration between the client, consultants, key trade partners and PCL experts is critical. Design review and development, constructability assessments, construction planning and quality management are necessary to construct an efficient and high-performing building envelope. We try to identify performance challenges at the design stage, and well before we get started on site.

Highlights

PCL Edmonton Buildings and Civil has 29 LEED-accredited professionals.

PCL Edmonton Buildings and Civil has completed 25 LEED-certified buildings, including one Well Core Certified Gold project and one net-zero project.

PCL provides an internal sustainability 101 training course.

PCL’s Sustainability Report shares the efforts we are taking to build and operate sustainably while delivering exceptional service levels.

Innovative initiatives (Sustainability Committee):

o Power BI emissions tracking dashboard for our project deliveries.

o Assessed different temporary hoardings and their energy efficiency versus the required heat. This allows us to understand emissions from a temporary heat perspective and better plan for sustainable solutions.

o Currently working on a prototype off-grid construction guard shack powered by solar with a high-performing envelope with very little heating requirement.

o PCL uses solar-powered jobsite trailers on several jobs and is testing out a BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) generator system for jobsite power.

Project Spotlights:

o Windermere Fire Hall – LEED Gold, Net-Zero.

o E.L. Smith WWTP – Solar PowerGeneration and BESS system.

o HSBC Bank Tower – BOMA Best, TOBI Award Winner.

o Brighton Block – bringing a 100-year-old building back to life.
